25KB/sec = 200kbit/s download speed (bits vs bytes). Your total throughput for the past 25 days is over 14 GB, and diablo III is 7.6 GB. Satellite bandwidth is satellite bandwidth, and costs around $4,000 per megabit (1024kbit/s) of *dedicated* bandwidth. Yep, it's expensive. That's why I brought the cellphone data plan into the discussion, because it's the only thing in the US that even approximates the infrastructure costs of satellite internet (I still think cellphone data plans overcharge, they get to use landlines for backhaul most of the time). It's also why our TOS specifically excludes P2P, and other high-bandwidth applications such as online gaming.

I'm sorry, is .5-2GB per day supposed to put me in my seat? You are probably seeing my 4-25KB/sec download of Diablo III, not the p2p traffic you supposedly are saying is fixed. Even if the D3 downloader is closed it has zero bearing on the speed in which my pages open. I would not care if this was 5-7 years ago Afghanistan, but this is 2012; being a 3rd world country as an excuse only goes so far when my interpreters make fun of the internet speeds. Really? Afghan civilians making fun of a corporation that is confident in its ability to support the Soldiers of the United States?

And throwing a Red Herring in the mix is a poor business practice and a fallacy of logic. Nothing in this article or my initial feedback mentioned a cell phone data plan. I can understand that you are trying to fix this, but I'm here to tell you that it isn't. When we are paying double for a minute fraction of the bandwidth you would back home, something is out of place.

Hey Kevin,

I checked into your complaint, and indeed there was a lot of p2p activity at Hughie, so I moved it up the list and our TAC got the new ruleset implemented there 5 hours ago.

I also took a look at your account to make sure that you were getting the service you paid for, and noted that on several occasions you've been able to download over 2GB (that's bytes, not bits) in a single day, with continuous 'logged on' periods over 36 hours. On average you've been downloading between 0.5 GB and 1GB of data a day.If you had been using a cell phone data plan, you would actually have had to pay about $250 for the bandwidth you've consumed in the last month.

I sure hope those p2p rules don't inconvenience you too much :)

Comment on Bouhammer Poll, When is the right time to leave Afghanistan? by Ron

I said other but will explain.

1) The first answer "out not" represents retreat IMO.

2) The second third and fourth (end of 2012,2013,2014) represent a timetable, and timetables change based upon the situation on the ground. Plus the enemy can make counter-plans.

3) Killing every single Taliban, and HIG would keep us there forever attempting to try that. Also we have to look at the standard we are using to determine when Afghan Police and Army are "good enough" to take over.

4) Saying we should have left years ago is another statement of defeat.

5) Having a permanent presence like Germany and Japan, well that will happen but not like WWII. Like Iraq there will be support (DOD,SF,ETT,PMT) there but having a permanent base there isn't a good idea.

6) Saying when the President or military leaders say so, means that it will be determined by American popular opinion. Remember the president (republican or democrat) is ruled by popular opinion and military leaders answer to the commander in chief. This one will happen regardless anyways.

WHAT WE SHOULD DO:

We should leave when the Afghans Police, Army, and infrastructure can hold their own. We CANNOT use our standards. But a "good enough" standard. As we withdraw we allow the Afghan Army and police to Fill in those areas and allow DOD support to ensure they are on the right path.

That is what we did in Iraq, and of course a modified version will happen because as we know Iraq is not Afghanistan !!

So we gradually leave allowing the Afghan Army and police to take on more roles in terms of policing their country. that is the withdrawal plan. that my best estimates can take from as of today about 3-5 years, which includes withdrawal of our resources as well to complete the withdrawal.

Hey Kevin,

hang on a bit, I'll check on Hughie. We've recently started rolling out new traffic shaping policies to limit the use of p2p file sharing which tends to bog down the network for everyone.

As for sniper hill, well, I've heard the exact opposite at other locations but maybe they correctly provisioned a site for once.
