Another reason why I love Soldiers Angels

Chuck Z. knows first hand the generosity of Soldiers Angels. He saw it when he was wounded in Iraq after being blown off a bridge by an IED he was almost standing over and into a canal. While in the hospital, Soldiers Angels gave me the very first voice activated laptop which later turned into Valour-IT (yes that is a picture of Chuck using the laptop in the hospital).

Well Chuck in back in a combat zone, this time it is Afghanistan. Soon after getting to his very remote location a whole bunch of Soldiers Angels boxes showed up for him and his men.

You can read about it at tcoverride.blogspot.com/2011/11/mail-call.html

On a side note, I am not sure if he knows it or not, but Chuck is an inspiration to my good friend and brother from another mother, Matt Goss, who I am teamed up with this weekend. I was with Chuck the night we both first met Matt two years ago. Chuck and Matt has a very special and emotional talk that has impacted both men still to this day. I am truly privileged to have been there as a witness to the special event.

Why Matt Goss and Bouhammer.com teamed up to honor Veterans Day

Some people have asked me why Matt Goss and I teamed up to honor Veterans next week (prlog.org/11716637). Matt and I want to accomplish two things with this event. We want to raise an AWARENESS of the day and what it means (or should mean) to all Americans and the World. We also want to raise the CONSCIOUSNESS of the Veterans around us in everyday life.

We have noticed a decline in recognition and un-appreciation of the Veterans Day holiday and what it means. The reality is that we as a Country would not have Memorial Day or even Independence Day without Veterans Day. At a rate of 1000 WWII vets dying every day and only one WWI veteran left on this planet, and millions more who have served this country in our society every day, it is extremely important to give our country pause to recognize and be conscious of these people. It could be the cab driver, the clerk in a store or a homeless man on the street. This day is not just about one war, or the wounded or any particular group of veterans, but all veterans. Regardless if they served 3 years and never saw combat or served over 20 years and were in multiple wars.

This year marks a chance to truly develop an awareness of Veterans Day and what it means to not only this country but also the world. Veterans day, is November 11th. In fact this year is extra-special because the date would be 11/11/11. Veterans Day (originally Remembrance Day) is a special day remembered by countries all over the world, originally in recognition of the end of World War I. A lot of the background can be found at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_Day including why the number ’11′ is so meaningful to it. Since Veteran’s day falls on a Friday this year I think it is perfect timing.  Continue reading

What a weekend with our Knob

Wow, I can’t believe it is Sunday night and the weekend is over already. We had an awesome, but very busy weekend over the last few days. It was Parent’s Weekend the last three days down at The Citadel and we were here to visit our Knob (that is what they call Freshmen). It was the first time we got to see him since dropping him off at the first of August.

We got to spend Friday afternoon with him and take him out to dinner on Friday night. We also knocked out a lot of shopping at the local Base Exchange on Charleston AFB, Walmart and Target, refilling supplies and picking up some new things he needed. Saturday morning the barracks were open and we had the chance to go into his room, meet some of his fellow knobs and meet some of the upper classmen leaders of his company. Then we had the privilege of seeing him promoted from Knob-Recruit to Knob-Cadet.

Time was flying by as one event led to another. After the promotion ceremony we were lucky enough to see all the cadets conduct their full parade. Lunch with our knob came after the parade and then it was onto the football game. The Citadel Bulldogs started out looking pretty bad, but they rallied and got within one touchdown making for an exciting 4th QTR.

Saturday night made for another great time spending quality family time with our son. Of course we were all pretty tired after a long day in the sun and walking all over.  Continue reading

Tillman honored in unique way

I love Hockey, and I love the US Army and soldiers, so it makes sense why I love this story.

This season, the Phoenix Coyotes backup goalie is using his mask to pay tribute to someone he never met yet holds a great deal of respect for: NFL star turned war hero Pat Tillman.

“To see him, as a professional athlete, stop doing what he had worked his whole life toward to do something he thought was right – join the Army and go over and do what he did – is a pretty amazing thing,” LaBarbera said. “Nobody else can say that. It’s a pretty special thing he did, so this is a representation of what he did and everyone that’s fighting over there.”

I think it is awesome for him to do this as a tribute to the NFL Football player, turned fallen Ranger. To check out a picture of his goalie mask and read the whole story see:

National POW/MIA Day, and a plea for one of them to be returned

Today is National POW/MIA Recognition Day across our country. A Day that America should pause and remember the Americans who are still not home from war. In fact this is one of only six days specified by law on which the black POW/MIA flag shall be flown over federal facilities and cemeteries, post offices and military installations. To learn more about POW/MIA Recognition Day, please check out:

There are thousands missing from Vietnam and still many others from all the way back to WWII. In fact we still have two missing, one from Iraq (Staff Sgt. Ahmed Altai) and one from Afghanistan (SGT Bowe Bergdahl).
