Bouhammer's Military Blog

A blog about Military Issues, Afghanistan, and everything in between

Blogger’s Roundtable with COL Randy Newman

The folks at DOD PAO had another decent Blogger’s Roundtable that I decided to participate in. It was with Marine Colonel Randy Newman who was the Commander of RCT-7 in Helmand Province Afghanistan. In this roundtable He discussed his leadership experience in Afghanistan and combat and civil operations there. He also discussed the work his Marines did and the challenges that remain.

I had the chance to ask him two questions. One was about the good news story of the turn-around of Nawa district and the other was about Marine amputees being deployed under his command. Nawa was a very nasty area when the RCT first moved into Helmand and was always on the news with a lot of death and destruction. Many of our brave Marines have lost their lives there. However you never hear about it anymore because it has been completely secured and turned around. I asked the Col about his engagement of PAOs and his work to get the message out about how they secured that area.

I have had a lot of interest on this blog about my stories of wounded warriors going back into combat, especially amputees. So I wanted to ask about that.

The other bloggers also has some very good questions that they asked of the Col. so be sure to listen to the whole clip. The entire roundtable only took 30 minutes or so.

1st Bouhammer Roundtable Podcast

I am so honored to have hosted the first ever Bouhammer Roundtable podcast this last weekend. I am joined on this podcast by two regular contributors to the Bouhammer blog, Mike T. and Scott Kesterson.

In this podcast, which is actually #13 on this site (not #12 as I stated in the podcast), Scott, Mike and I talk about a variety of topics dealing with Afghanistan. We cover the use of National Guard and the important role they have played in the war, some of McChrystal’s policies and even the current hot topic of the photo by the AP of the dying Marine last Friday.

As you can imagine, the connectivity from Afghanistan is not always the best but Scott’s connections holds up well until the end of the podcast. I hope you can take some time to listen to the three of us talk about some of the current hot-topic and important issues with Afghanistan.

05/07/09 You Served Radio

Tonight we have big show and we are expecting a huge audience tuning in.

CPT Roger Hill from Dog Company 1/506th, 4th BCT, 101st (www.morethanbrothers.com) will be on the show for an hour to talk about his Article 32 hearing and how he is trying to get the Army to change his discharge type so he is able to leave the service with some benefits after giving so much.

We will also have P.W. Singer, author of “Wired For War”, a book studying robotic and drone warfighters and explores how these new war machines are changing the very nature of human conflict. Watch video here: www.ted.com/index.php/talks/pw_singer_on_robots_of_war.html

04/30/09 You Served Radio

Tonight we will be catching up with film-maker and embedded freelance journalist/blogger, Scott Kesterson, live from Afghanistan. Scott’s film, At War, was just shown at the Annual Milblog Conference last weekend and is showing at the Buffalo-Niagara Film Festival this weekend. He has been out on missions the last few days and will be giving us a fresh perspective of how things are going on the front lines of the Global War on Terror.

We are also talking with Mark Baker, creator of the popular Army Times cartoon “PVT Murphy’s Law” (www.pvtmurphy.com/). Mark and CJ are old friends so it should be a good time to find out any dirt on CJ from the past. We will be talking about his very famous comic strip, the feedback he gets about it and how Murphy has grown over the years from a Private to a Sergeant.

Last but not least, Wesley Gray, author of “EMBEDDED: A Marine Corps Advisor Inside the Iraqi Army” will join CJ and Troy to talk about his book and the story he is trying to tell the world through this book.

2009 Milblog Conference

Well I am here in Arlington, VA (D.C. Area) to attend the 2009 Milblog Conference. It is going to be a great time and I can’t wait to get it started. Of course I really can’t wait to start the debut showing of At War tonight for what will hopefully be a packed house. I have no guess as to how many will attend, but I hope we have to cram them in, and I am praying that everything goes off without a hitch. Of course after the showing of At War we will be having a awesome cocktail party and reception here at the hotel which should produce a lot of memorable moments and incriminating pictures for some. Starting tonight and through the weekend CJ and I will be live micro-blogging and even writing some regular blog posts over at the other site we both write for, www.youserved.com. We will be micro-blogging on the You Served twitter account at www.twitter.com/youserved.

So be sure to follow us, the by the moment happenings, and any other crazy stories that may come out of this year’s conference. I will try to throw up a blog or two here, plus I will also be micro-blogging on my personal account at www.twitter.com/bouhammer
