Pitchfork Brigade call to action; Please READ THIS

Not that www.blackfive.net needs any traffic from me since they get like five times the amount of web traffic that I do, but you need to head over and read this posting.

Take a moment and head to www.blackfive.net/main/2010/07/when-the-media-attacks-a-veterans-wounds.html and then please contact Imperial Valley Press Editor, Brad Jennings, at 760-337-3425 or editor@ivpressonline.com and politely and professionally request that they print a retraction, make an apology or fire someone for allowing this to happen.

I posted this on BF too, but might as well make the same point here:

First, that cartoon just isn’t funny…whatever the punchline is supposed to be, I’m not getting it. Bottom line is it uses the war injury as point to ridicule, and while I get the “joke” was meant to mock the uninformed skateboarding voters, it doesn’t work.

But – in defense of the IV Press, when I embedded as a freelancer journalist last year (one of several trips over the last few years) the Press was one of the select newspapers interested in stories and pix about soldiers from their local region:

I can assure you that many newspapers in supposedly conservative places (Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, etc) had no interest in any coverage at all, not photos, not stories, not nothing.

So this absurd cartoon aside, the I.V. Press has proven their interest in relating the story of soldiers on the job overseas.

Not excusing this cartoon at all – which apparently they will apologize for – but just giving a full picture of the paper…
