"I wonder, is it too many seasons of Survivor and American Idol or people trying to replicate scenes from Jackass that have made this country to become dumber and dumber every day?"

You know, I don't think we're actually dumber -- we're just more partisan and more deeply entrenched in this "us vs. them" thinking that pervades politics today. IMO, the red vs. blue debate in this country is what has gotten dumber, not so much the people.

Here's a good book that helped explain the current American Condition to me:

Mistakes Were Made, (But Not By Me): http://www.amazon.com/Mistakes-Were-Made-But-Not/dp/0151010986

How can people believe things that are obviously not true? Cognitive dissonance. If it's easier to believe in Santa Claus (or Oil in Afghanistan) then it is to believe that GWB got one right, or that sometimes wars are needed . . . wheeee, down the fairy trail we go. It only looks insane from the outside, I guess.

Thanks for the blog, and congrats on your recent retirement. You've had a history of service anyone could be proud of.
