Afghan-International Security Force Kills Militant Responsible for Numerous Attacks

BOUHAMMER NOTE- Any day we rack up some dead Tangos is a good day to me.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2009-08-[CA]-638
KABUL, Afghanistan (Aug. 26) – An Afghan-international security force killed a Taliban militant in Kandahar Province today, responsible for several improvised explosive devices and small arms attacks in the region.

The joint force searched for the suspected militant southwest of Kandahar City, near the village of Salavat, where intelligence sources reported the known Taliban militant to be located.

During the operation, the force stopped the militant while on his motorcycle and issued multiple verbal commands to dismount. The militant ignored the commands and brandished a weapon, demonstrating hostile intent. The force engaged and killed the militant. A subsequent examination by the force confirmed the identity of the Taliban militant.

There were no Afghan, international security force or civilian casualties during the incident.

Though southern Afghanistan is the center of the Taliban-led militancy, the Taliban continues to alienate itself from the civilian populace by indiscriminate use of IED and small arms fire attacks. Afghan and international security forces continue to work together – day and night – to expel the Taliban and ensure the legitimate governance of the country.

ISAF is a key component of the international community’s engagement in Afghanistan, assisting the Afghan authorities in providing security and stability and creating the conditions for reconstruction and development

A Terrible Milestone

Another Terrible Milestone was reached today. One that I knew would be coming and had talked about since the beginning of the year. With the death of 4 US service-members in southern Afghanistan today, 2009 became the deadliest year in the war in Afghanistan.

From Military.com

The number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan this year surpassed that for all of 2008 on Tuesday with the deaths of four US military personnel in a bomb blast in the country’s south.

The soldiers operating under NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed by an improvised bomb, the Taliban’s weapon of choice, in southern Afghanistan, the alliance force said.

The latest casualties bring to 63 the number of foreign soldiers who have died in Afghanistan this month and to 295 the death toll since January, making this the deadliest year for foreign troops since their 2001 arrival.

"Four International Security Assistance Force service members were killed today as a result of an improvised explosive device (IED) detonation that occurred in southern Afghanistan," the force said in a statement.

It said only that the soldiers were killed in southern Afghanistan, without giving the exact location. Southern Afghanistan comprises four provinces that are a major theatre for an increasingly bloody insurgency.

Quoting Navy Chief Petty Officer Brian Naranjo, the statement said the soldiers were Americans.

The soldiers were on patrol "in one of the most violent areas of Afghanistan", the statement said.

The international force, now numbering more than 100,000 troops, lost 294 soldiers in 2008.

Of those killed so far this year, 172 were Americans compared to 155 who died in Afghanistan last year.

The rest of the dead soldiers were from other nations contributing to efforts to wipe out the escalating Taliban insurgency in the country.

Britain, Canada and the Netherlands are the biggest troop contributors to the international effort, after the United States.

The Taliban, in power between 1996 and 2001, have stepped up their attacks each year, prompting President Barack Obama’s administration to send additional troops in an effort to defeat the Islamist rebels.

News of the latest troop deaths came after the government said that four Afghan civilians were killed and five were injured in a roadside bomb, in an eastern part of the strife-torn country.

The civilians were killed when a bomb, similar to that which killed the US troops and also planted by Taliban-linked rebels, struck their vehicle in Paktia province, bordering Pakistan.

The area is also struggling to cope with escalating Taliban activity.

The spike in troop deaths in Afghanistan has renewed debate in Britain and the US about their continuing role in the conflict.

Most of the deaths are caused by roadside bombs, which also claim a high number of civilian lives.

The violence comes as the war-torn country awaits the results from last week’s presidential elections, only the second in Afghanistan’s history.

Early results released Tuesday show President Karzai only two percent ahead of his nearest rival, former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah.

The final results are not due before September 3

Another Example of Election Day Violence

I don’t care who you are, and some of you read this blog, but if you think we (the coalition) are terrible monsters because we may accidently hit the wrong Kulat or shoot at a vehicle that appears to be running a road block and the enemy is not doing this then you need to do us all a favor and quit stealing oxygen. Leave it for the rest of us with common sense.

The enemy is ruthless, heartless and uncaring. They kill at a whim and don’t care who they kill. The other day a person commented on my blog post titled The Difference between the US and the Taliban. She has tried to argue that we (the big Ugly Americans) whom fight and die to protect her ass are the bad boys on the Afghanistan block. That we are bullies and we need to get out of Afghanistan. She quotes ex-Australian military officer David Kilcullen’s testimony to Congress when he threw out some unsubstantiated number on the number of civilians killed (700) by unmanned drones and that we only killed 14 Al-Queda leaders.

Hmm, it seems to me that if this was the case the Human Rights groups all over the world would be jumping up and down screaming. The UN would be investigating, etc.,  etc. Kilcullen may be a smart guy, or at least Petreaus thinks so, but I think his numbers are Babulah (that is Pasto for bullshit). We have killed senior leader, after senior leader in the Taliban and the AQI from our drones in Pakistan. It isn’t our fault they surround themselves with innocent people or their family members. Shame on them, the blood is on their hands. If those Taliban leaders don’t want their families harmed, then they should not hang around them until they know we aren’t looking for them anymore.

To the point of this posting, well the point is I want to inform you of the following article that highlights another example of election day violence. Another example of the enemy indiscriminately killing innocent Afghans, another example of why we are there. The enemy we fight respects the Quran less than the National Association of Atheists (if there is such a group). I say this because if they did read and respect the Quran then they would not go about blowing up and killing innocent Afghans, especially children.

They were less than 200m from the Emergency Hospital. Police and medics were on the scene in seconds. By the time I’d taken stock and started to move again, the ambulance was already there. Without a stretcher, four men – most of them medics – lifted the limp body into an ambulance. He was wearing a beige shalwar kameez. His bicycle lay abandoned on the road. His sandals were strewn across the tarmac.

What was left of his head hung backwards, smearing blood over a plastic bag in the boot as they struggled to heave him in. The other brother was still wailing.

Timeline of War in Afghanistan

The Council on Foreign Relations contacted me to tell me about an interesting timeline they have up on their site which outline the milestones of the war in Afghanistan. It is emails like those from organizations like that which flatter me beyond words. I never, ever meant my blog to be the go-to place on all things Afghanistan like it has become and it humbles me every time one of this groups contacts me.

Anyway, back to the timeline, it is very interesting how they have pieced together some of the major events in the war on terror from before 9/11/01 through the elections last week. I think they missed some important parts, but that is my opinion. I think there were some major timelines when opium production went through the roof, and when attacks on both innocent Afghans and coalition forces spiked. Since they told me they read this blog and they were interested in my feedback, there it is.

Overall I think it gives a very good synopsis as to how we got where we are today in Afghanistan and I encourage my readers to check it out as you may learn a thing or two, or may just be reminded how all this started. Click the link below to check out the timeline.

US Envoy to Afghanistan makes Karzai Cry

Ok, well maybe he didn’t make him cry. I kind of embellished that one a little bit, but hey it got your attention didn’t it? However it appears that Karzai was a little upset that Ambassador Holbrooke questioned Karzai’s tactics in his election and appears to have pushed Karzai on a run-off to validate the election and to prove there was no fraud.

It ticked Karzai off and I must say I can understand why. I mean who does the USA think they are? They only came in to the country, eliminated the Taliban as a ruling authority, helped put Karzai in power, have given the country their own election process, have given the people of Afghanistan a growing but present Army and Police Force, have given the people a court system and have built more roads, wells, schools and other infrastructure pieces than anyone has ever done. Who are they (the USA) to stick their foreign noses in the business of Afghanistan. What concern is it of theirs?

Hmm, that sounds like a spoiled teenager that wants to know why his/her parents care if he/she attends high school classes or skips, smokes drugs or drinks, or wants to quit school and run off to be a roadie.

Maybe because like the parent that has invested many years, a lot of time and money, a lot of love and caring into the up-bringing of that teenager…WE the USA care about all the time, money, blood, sweat and sons and daughters we have invested into establishing a democracy and a government.

We want it to grow and be successful and not be a cesspool of corruption, greed and unethical behavior. You know; don’t do as we do, do as we say.
