Proud to be an American

Yes I am not an Obama fan, and I think anyone who reads this blog or knows me personally knows that. However today is a good day and is a another example of why I am proud to be an American. My family went to the last two inaugurations, and we caught some flack for that. Both times our kids were taken out of school as we incurred the cost to go to D.C. to attend. We caught flack from some of the liberal teachers from my son’s schools who even threatened to not allow our boys to make up schoolwork because their reason for being absent was not an “allowable” absence. We ended up getting the school administration involved to make sure this would not happen. The administration was very supportive. They, like we understood that this is a historic occasion and that our kids would learn more by being there on that day then anything they would learn in school.
Every inauguration is a good example of our free democracy in action. To be there, to be part of the event, to move through the crowd, to witness the swearing in, to stand on the road and wave at the President and the first family is all part of it. I know my family will never forget being there, and I am sure it will be a fond memory of my sons as they get older and reflect on their childhood.
This is what makes our country great, we are not a dictatorship but instead we allow for the free and open vote of a new leader and the succession of command. The government does not stop, and in modern times the war does not stop. Things continue to move without a blip. Barack Hussein Obama is going to be our President in a few hours. I am not going to be an asshole like many were towards President Bush and be a Obama hater from day one. He is the man, as per 52% of the citizens of this country. It is up to him and his actions and words to keep my support or lose it. I know already that I don’t support some of his decisions, but I didn’t support all of President Bush’s either. So I will do my best to support the new President and not to be a hypocrite by giving in and acting like those that I despise. He is going to be our President in a few hours and I am good with this. Lets get him in there and get on with life.
Unlike the soon to be First Lady, I have always been proud to be an American and today is just one more reason why.
